If it's simply not a snack without the tangy taste of ranch dressing, these are the corn nuts for you. They also happen to be crunchy to the max, in case that's another must-have quality.

Given their cult following here in the states, you'd think they were an American invention. But the credit for corn nuts must be given to the South Americans, who are likely to be found nibbling on their cancha or maiz tostado with Caipirinhas and ceviche-and that's an excellent tradition to adopt here, too, though beer and baseball is a solid choice, too.

As for their name, corn nuts are not nuts at all but large white corn kernels (the kind you find in Latin American markets and many supermarkets) that are toasted to give them a similarly crunchy, nutty appeal. In fact, corn nuts are a crunch-seeker's serendipity, since they are crackling as they come, but with a little give on the inside.
