It's impossible to resist the siren call of candy corn, the brightly colored, supremely striped, buttercream tasting kernels that are a favorite come October 31-or the day before, which is National Candy Corn Day.

Candy corn has been around since the 1880s, when the population was mostly rural and there was an interest in all things farmyard. Hence, the faux corn was called Chicken Feed and had a rooster on the rustic package. Making the candy was quite innovative for its time, with a labor-intensive process to achieve the striated appearance (by the way, the white was poured first, then the orange, and finally the yellow on top). It wasn't until the trick or treating ritual took off in the 1940s that the tri-color triangles became associated with Halloween-and debates took off as to the best way to eat it. Turns out about 40 percent of us prefer to nibble the narrow white tip first, while another 40 percent munch on the whole thing at once. The outliers tend to bite off the wider, yellow end. Everyone, it seems, has a method to their candy-corn madness.
